How Many Tables and Chairs Do I Need for My Party?
Renting too few tables is stressful, and renting too many wastes money and space. Luckily, the math is easy once you know how many people each table seats.
How many people fit at each table
- 60-inch round table: 8 to 10 guests
- 8 ft rectangle table: 8 to 10 guests
- 6 ft rectangle table: 6 to 8 guests
- 4 ft table: 4 adults, or 6 kids
The quick formula
Divide your guest count by the number of people per table, then round up. For a comfortable meal, use the lower seating number. If guests will only be eating casually, you can use the higher one.
| Guests | 60-inch rounds | 8 ft tables | Chairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 6 to 7 | 6 to 7 | 50 to 55 |
| 100 | 10 to 13 | 10 to 13 | 100 to 105 |
| 150 | 15 to 19 | 15 to 19 | 150 to 155 |
Don’t forget the extra tables
This is where people often come up short. Besides guest seating, you may need tables for:
- The buffet and the dessert display
- Gifts and a guest book
- Drinks and coolers
- The DJ or the main table
Most parties need 2 to 4 extra tables. 4 ft tables and 6 ft tables work well for these.
Round tables or long tables?
Round tables make conversation easy and are a classic choice for receptions. Long tables feel family-style and photograph beautifully, and they often fit better in a narrow backyard. You can also mix the two.
